Srinagar, Sep 4 (KNO): Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi on Friday criticised the National Conference-led government over the delay in resolving the stipend hike for intern doctors and reservation rationalisation, saying the government must deliver solutions instead of giving administrative explanations.
In a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Inam said the government was not elected to tell people that one matter was with the Finance Department and another with the Centre, but to resolve issues and fulfil commitments made to the people.
“The government was not elected to tell people that one matter is with Finance and another is with the Centre. It was elected to resolve these issues and fulfil the commitments made to the people,” he said.
On the intern doctors’ stipend, he said the enhancement proposal had remained pending with the Finance Department since 2024 despite the government acknowledging the legitimacy of the demand.
“If the proposal has been pending since 2024, why has a decision not been taken? These young doctors are serving in government hospitals and carrying essential responsibilities. They deserve a fair decision and timely relief,” he said.
On reservation rationalisation, Inam said Open Merit students and aspirants had also been waiting for years for a resolution. He noted that the proposal had gone through the J&K government and the Centre, with the Cabinet approving the response to queries raised by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“What the people need now is clarity on the outcome and a clear timeline for implementation, not another round of uncertainty. The government must pursue the matter to its logical conclusion,” he said.
Drawing a comparison with matters concerning the government itself, Inam questioned the absence of similar delays when decisions involve the privileges and facilities of those in power.
“When the salaries and allowances of MLAs are to be enhanced, does the government tell them to wait indefinitely? When vehicles are required for the government, are people asked to remain patient for years? When it comes to perks and privileges, there is urgency. Why should that urgency disappear when the issue concerns our youth?” he asked.
Inam said the issue was ultimately about priorities.
“A government is elected to solve people’s problems. Our youth need decisions, not administrative explanations. Whether it concerns young doctors, Open Merit students and aspirants, or any other section of society, the government must demonstrate the political will to deliver,” he said.
The spokesperson urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to personally intervene and ensure that both matters are resolved within a definite timeframe.
“The people voted for change and solutions. They should not have to spend years waiting for promises to become decisions,” Inam said.—(KNO)
